Opera
Christoph Willibald Gluck
Alceste
27 Feb, 14 - 15 Mar, 14
Musical conductor: Ivor Bolton
Stage Director: Krzysztof Warlikowski
With Gluck, opera returns to its roots. Following the ideas advocated by Rousseau, this work aims to put dramatic action in the spotlight, discarding any frills or decorations. It is a bridge between Baroque and Classical opera, returning to music inspired by Antiquity, searching for what the composer called, "the beauty of simplicity". In Alceste, Gluck not only manages to create an innovative score, but he also gives dignity to female characters, who were so maligned by the libertines of the 18th century. His idealisation of the feminine is a recurring theme, reflected in characters such as Ifigenia and Alceste, who are willing to sacrifice themselves in the place of their consorts, and are some of the most beautiful heroines from the work of Euripedes, the production of the Teatro Real.
